Fun Winter Activities for Teens (and How to Stay Safe)

Is your teen getting antsy with cabin fever? As the days get shorter and colder, it can be hard to come up with ideas for things to do. But don’t worry, there are plenty of fun winter activities they can enjoy while being mindful of safety and social distancing guidelines. Let’s take a look at a few!

Outdoor Adventures

Winter is the perfect time to explore nature! Bundle up in warm clothes, pack some snacks, and hit the trails! Cross-country skiing is a great way to explore different terrains while getting some exercise. Or if you prefer something slower-paced, snowshoeing is an easy way to enjoy the outdoors without too much exertion. The Greek Peak Nordic Center has some great options for both activities! Check out their website here for daily updates about conditions. Before going on any outdoor adventure, make sure that your teen knows how to read maps and has essential items like a compass or GPS device as well as extra layers of clothes and food.

Indoor Activities

If being outside isn’t your thing, there are still plenty of fun things you can do indoors. Board games are always a great option—they’re not just fun but also help teens learn the strategy and critical thinking skills. Video games are another popular choice for teens—just remember to set boundaries for screen time! As an alternative, many museums have virtual tours available online so your teen can explore art from around the world without ever leaving home. Visit The Collector to visit some museums virtually!

Staying Safe

The most important thing when planning activities this winter is safety—make sure that your teen is taking necessary precautions while engaging in activities both indoors and out. When it comes to outdoor activities like skiing or snowshoeing, make sure they wear appropriate protective gear such as helmets or gloves if needed. Be sure to dress warm and in layers- frostbite and hypothermia are no joke in this weather. It’s also important that they stay hydrated throughout the day! Even if you are cold, you are still at risk for dehydration if you are not intaking enough fluids.1

Winter doesn’t have to be boring! There are plenty of safe ways for teens to explore nature or engage in indoor activities over the coming months. With these tips in mind, we hope you find something that works for you and your family during this winter season! Keep exploring–and stay safe out there!
