Don’t flush unused drugs!! Dispose of them at our semi-annual Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, September 24

Each year, Cortland Area Communities That Care and Cortland Prevention Resources work together to hold the Drug Take Back Event, where unused and/or expired prescription medications can be disposed of properly.

Why is this event important? Properly disposing of unused prescription medications is critically important for a few reasons:

  • Reduces the risk of accidental poisoning of yourself and/or others (including children and pets).
  • Reduces harm to the environment- by flushing drugs down the toilet or by throwing them out, the drugs are then released into our ecosystem which can harm animals and other humans. The vast majority of medications polluting water systems are NOT flushed out through water treatment or filtration.
  • Recent data has shown that most misuse among drugs comes from sources close to the individual such as family/friends and medicine cabinets at home.

The September 24th Drug Take Back Event will be taking place the following locations and times:

  • Cortlandville Fire Station: 9:00am – 1:00pm
  • Homer Town Hall: 9:00am – 12:00pm
  • Cincinnatus Fire Station: 9:00am – 12:00pm
  • Marathon Village Green/Marathon High School: 9:00am – 12:00pm

Drive in and drive out– Volunteers will direct you where to drop off your unused prescription medications and you can be on your way!
